Ende 1981/Anfang 1982, gerade angekommen in Berlin, im Osten der geteilten Stadt und in großen Schritten die neue Umgebung erkundend. Beflügelt vom “Zauber des Neuen” begann ich, den neuen Ort zu erkunden, Kontakte zu knüpfen und Arbeitsmöglichkeiten zu suchen. Einen Job, zum Broterwerb und Perspektiven, um meine fotografische Arbeit weiterzuentwickeln. Nach einiger Zeit fand ich eine kleine Wohnung, in der ich, provisorisch, eine Dunkelkammer einrichten konnte. Der Anfang war gemacht! Vor der Wand des Größeren der beiden Zimmer begann ich Portraits von meinem schnell wachsenden neuen Bekanntenkreis zu machen. Das war, vor allem am Anfang, auch eine Phase des Experimentierens mit den Möglichkeiten von Portraits, die Grenze zur Performance war fließend, es ging um Fragen nach Kenntlichkeit, Ausdruck und Authentizität. Und es ging um Fragmentierung.

At the end of 1981/beginning of 1982, I had just arrived in Berlin, in the eastern part of the divided city, and was exploring my new surroundings at a rapid pace. Inspired by the “magic of the new,” I began to explore my new surroundings, make contacts, and look for work opportunities. A job to earn a living and prospects to further develop my photographic work. After some time, I found a small apartment where I could set up a temporary darkroom. The first step had been taken! In front of the wall of the larger of the two rooms, I began taking portraits of my rapidly growing circle of new acquaintances.
Especially in the beginning, this was also a phase of experimenting with the possibilities of portraits. The line between portraiture and performance was fluid; it was about questions of recognizability, expression, and authenticity. And it was about fragmentation.
